7 Warning Signs Your AC Needs Servicing

Your air conditioner usually warns you before it fails completely — you just have to know what to listen and look for. Catch these seven signs early, and you turn a ₹15,000 breakdown into a routine service visit.

Most AC failures don't happen out of nowhere. They build up quietly over weeks: a little less cooling here, a slightly higher bill there. By the time the unit stops working on the hottest afternoon of the year, the warning signs have usually been there for a while. Here are the seven to act on.

1.Cooling has become weak or slow

If a room that used to cool in ten minutes now takes half an hour — or never quite gets cold — your AC is struggling. The usual culprits are clogged filters, dirty coils, or low refrigerant. All three are restoring-to-new with a proper service, but left alone they only get worse and pile pressure on the compressor.

2.Your electricity bill jumped

A sudden rise in your bill, with no change in how much you use the AC, is one of the clearest red flags. A dirty, poorly maintained unit can draw 10–25% more power to deliver the same cooling. That wasted energy is money leaking out every single day until the unit is cleaned and checked.

3.Strange noises from the unit

A healthy AC runs with a steady, soft hum. Rattling usually means a loose part, buzzing can point to an electrical issue, and grinding or screeching suggests a motor or fan problem. None of these fix themselves — the sooner a technician looks, the smaller the repair.

4.Bad or musty smells

A musty, sour smell when the AC switches on means mould or bacteria are growing on damp coils or in a blocked drain line. A sharp, burning smell is more urgent — switch the unit off and book a service right away, as it can indicate an electrical fault.

⚠️ Don't ignore burning smells

A burning or acrid odour is the one sign you should never wait on. Turn the AC off at the switch and have it inspected before running it again.

5.Water leaking or pooling

Water dripping from the indoor unit or pooling on the floor almost always means a blocked or misaligned drain line. It's a simple fix when caught early, but ignored it can damage your walls, furniture, and the unit's internals.

6.Ice on the pipes or coils

Frost or ice forming on the refrigerant pipes or coils is a sign of restricted airflow or low refrigerant. It looks harmless but forces the compressor to overwork — and the compressor is the most expensive component in the whole system.

7.It's been over six months

Sometimes the biggest warning sign is simply the calendar. If you can't remember the last time your AC was serviced, it's overdue. Most homes should book a service at least twice a year — once before summer and once after the monsoon.

The bottom line

An air conditioner rarely fails without warning. Weak cooling, rising bills, odd noises, smells, leaks, and ice are all your unit's way of asking for attention. Acting on them early is the difference between a quick, affordable service and a costly emergency repair in peak summer. When in doubt, a quick inspection is always cheaper than a breakdown.
